STOELZEL'S DERELICT COMMERCIAL BUILDING. THE THING CONTINUES.

More card scenery fun again this time dudes and dudettes, but first some art. This is another piece by GRIMBRO, I neglected to mention this last time, my humble apologies.

You may recognise the zombie as the boat owning dick head Steve (played by Ty Burrell) from the 2004 remake of Dawn of the Dead.

Ramping up the skill level this time, by far my biggest project yet is Stoelzel's Structures Derelict Commercial Building. A massive 28 pages including the instructions, but don't let that put you off, this kit is amazing. Up until now I have only built a couple of Microtactix's building and I was impressed with those. Stoelzel's is in a different league, fully detailed interior, it's damn impressive for a free download.

REMEMBER TO READ THE INSTRUCTIONS

After reading the instructions several times,(there are three different ways to build it), I decided to use The Sliced House method of assembly, for ease of gaming. Basically each floor is a different box which stack on top of each other.

ISOMETRIC - FRONT AND RIGHT SIDE.

I much prefer this configuration as it takes away the need to get fingers into awkward spaces knocking figures over and such. Although you then need to disguise the cuts between floors, this is easily achieved by painting the exposed foamcore an appropriate colour.

ISOMETRIC - BACK AND LEFT SIDE.

I still haven't tried to cut out the windows or doors yet, that's another skill step for another time. This was a step up in skills as it was, I'm glad I built the display base first to get used to rabbeting, a technique used throughout this build.
CLOSE UP OF SOME OF THE POSTERS.

The outside has been decorated with lots of posters, I don't know exactly where on the internet these came from as they were kindly donated to the cause by WNI regular The Tollman. To be honest the less I know about The Tollman's internet usage the better. He's weird!
WARNING SIGN FOR UNWANTED VISITORS.

The posters cover all kinds of subjects from bands and pop culture to humorous sayings. Like I said they were chosen by The Tollman.
MORE POSTERS COURTESY OF THE TOLLMAN.

The interiors are fully detailed, very nicely too. It was little nerve wracking lining up the exterior and interior print outs, but I think I got the hang of it in the end.
INTERIOR GROUND FLOOR.

The only thing I had any real difficulty with was the stairs. My first staircase, but it turned out OK in the end, I just had to leave off a step as I had stuck mine to foamcore.
INTERIOR FIRST FLOOR.

All in all, I was very pleased with how this kit turned out and would recommend Stoelzel's Derelict Commercial Property to everybody, it's a large building and would make a great base for your survivors.
THE ROOF TOP. (NOTE LADDER ACCESS).

Well that's all I got for this time dudes and dudettes, so until the next time follow the DUDE'S example and "take it easy".

  1. I had a lot of fun making this building, Bob. For a freebie it really is a remarkable model and if this doesn't persuade you that Carl Stoelzel makes the best card models on the market then I don't know what will. Nice use of posters, by the way.

I really enjoyed making this building. For a freebie it's outstanding. I don't think I need persuading that Carl makes the best product. It shows itself in this build alone. If I was going to pay for card models, he would get my money every time.

For giving us gamers such a quality product, for free no less.

  3. I am slowly coming round to liking the idea of card building. It's seeing ones like this that make me think they are more worthwhile than last time I looked. Nice one Bob.

    1. Clint, you really ought to download this set and marvel at just how good it is. Remember, it is free to download so you have nothing to lose and everything to gain. The beauty of a model like this is that it can be used in so many genres, not just a contemporary setting.

I was pretty uncertain at first but when you compare cost against plastic or whatever, there is no comparison. Card wins hands down. The quality of Carl's kits are second to none, just take your time to build your skill set and you'll have great looking, cost effective terrain in no time at all.

  5. Excellent job mate. I think this is easiest way of doing these sort of buildings can then track what is going on in each floor far easier

I have big awkward fingers, so bit of a no brainer really. Just have to be careful cutting the walls into their seperate walls. I think all my multi-storey builds will be made this way.

  6. That is something else from the first few models now, eh? Great job! Next stop: fully detailed interior? :D

I also compliment your decision not to cut windows and doors. Actually, I am getting an itch to add another layer of cork to my buildings to get rid of the holes - when there is a model next to a window a hole is nice, but in every other instinct it just looks awful and it ruins the sturdiness of a model.

It's a big improvement on the first few models. I've already started making some interior models, mainly crates and boxes for now. I'm sure other things will be found suitable along the way.
At this point my skills are not up to making see-thru windows and working doors just yet.
